“Mommy, I hate you!” Jimmy screams and pouts. Today is the big day for him and yet, his mother did not turn up for the occasion. He wakes up earlier than usual in the morning just to catch his mother before she leaves for work. “I promise you I’ll be there, okay? I’ll rush down straight away after my job is finish…” Jimmy still can hear his mother’s voice in his head, promising him that she will come but yet, halfway through the party, he still did not see her anywhere.
Today is the costume party to celebrate Jimmy’s birthday. His mother and him have plan for this quite a long time ago and they even get together to work out the costume for him. However, his mother receives a phone call from her office the day before, asking her to go back to work the next day. Unable to decline, his mother can only ask his father to start the party for him and promise Jimmy that she will be back in time to cut the cake with him.
Everyone is present and Jimmy is all ready in his ladybug costume and the make-up. Now all left that is not ready yet is just the presence of his mother. Jimmy plays with his friends but his eyes are always on the door. He hopes for the door to be open any moment and his mother will appear. Soon, it is time to cut the cake but his mother has not yet arrive.
“Jimmy, it’s time to cut the cake… let’s not keep your friends waiting. We’ll keep a slice for your mommy, so don’t worry!’ Jimmy’s father shouts over to Jimmy, calling him over to cut the cake. He walks little by little over to the table with a sulky face. In his heart, he prays that his mother will appear just in time to cut the cake with him. His heartbeat gets faster and faster with the each step he takes. Hope still lingers in his heart as his father raises Jimmy’s hands together with the knife, ready to cut the cake. As the knife slices through the cake, Jimmy’s heart drops. Tears well up in his big, innocent eyes. He cannot believe that his dearest mother has not turn up for his birthday party, not even when he cuts the cake. He continue to stare at the door silently, waiting for his mother to appear through the doorway. When his mother finally appears, tears roll down his chubby cheeks. “I hate you…” Jimmy screams toward his mother…
